The Great Sand Dunes National Park is around 2 hours away, but totally worth the trip if you have the time.

Tips for sand dune boarding:
DRESS WARM and cover all parts of your body. When the wind blows, the sand can sting. Ladies: wear a hat so that sand doesn’t cover every inch of your hair.
I would highly recommend bringing some skiing goggles (or any goggles for that matter). The sand can sting your eyes. Keep your eyes protected so that you can enjoy your time!
You can bring your own boards to sled on. If you aren’t able to pack a board, you can rent one at the closest town!
If you plan on being here all day, I would recommend bringing some snacks or a packed lunch
Plan to take lots of pictures :D
